Chapter 23: Number Twenty-Nine
The lake in June was ten degrees colder than it looked.
"It's a lie," Nash said.
He stood in it up to his waist, with his arms wrapped around his ribs.
"It's all a lie. It looks like a postcard."
"It is a postcard," Gaspard said, from the dock.
"It's an ice bath with ducks."
"Then get out."
"I'm not getting out. I'm making a point."
The sun had gone orange behind the pines.
The pond Gaspard had flooded in January was only a green patch of reeds on the far shore.
The cabin stood dark on the bank, with its chimney cold.
It was the last night of June.
Tomorrow was the first of July, and a pen, and a room full of cameras.
Gaspard sat on the end of the dock in nothing but his jeans, with his feet in the water.
His scar was white in the low light.
He looked at Nash with the grey eyes half closed.
"Come here," he said.
"You come here."
"I am dry. I intend to stay that way."
"That's the problem," Nash said, and waded to him through the cold, and put both hands on his knees.
He spread them.
The planks were warm under his forearms, and the water slapped soft at his ribs.
Gaspard's breath caught.
"Nash."
"Shh."
"You will freeze."
"I'll keep warm."
