Chapter 14: Ours
Jae-wook took the envelope, said "Thank you," and shut the door on the lawyer's polite face.
He did it gently.
Then he leaned his forehead on the wood and breathed.
"Fraud," he said to the door. "He has the nerve to say fraud."
"He'll file today," Do-yoon said.
"Let him."
They locked the hanok, left the letters in the safe, and rode back to Hannam-dong with the sun coming up gold over the river.
Do-yoon didn't speak the whole way.
He sat with the lacquer box in his lap and watched his own hands.
Jae-wook drove with one wrist on the wheel and let him be quiet.
In the bedroom, with the curtains still open on the dawn, Do-yoon stood at the foot of the bed and finally said it.
"Do I want you because they wrote it?"
Jae-wook turned from the window.
"What?"
"They planned all of it. The clause, the room, the year. Every night we spent was in the plan."
"Doyoon-ah."
"I need to know if I would have wanted you anyway. Or if I've just done what two dead men set up for me."
Jae-wook crossed the room.
He took Do-yoon's face in both hands and looked at him with those warm amber eyes.
"Ask me with the lights on," he said.
