Chapter 11: Say It Again

"I'll tell them which one is mine," I said again, and my voice came out smaller than I meant.

"Which one?"

"You know which."

"I don't." Rafe did not touch me. "I want to hear the whole thing, Camille, because I've been sitting beside you for a week not knowing."

I stared at him.

"You think I'd go back."

"I think you said yes to me in the time it took to pour a cup of coffee, and you never asked one question about the man you were marrying." He said it flatly, looking at the piano. "I think you'd have said yes to anyone with a ledger who made it painless. I think if he had come to you with flowers the first day, you'd be in Ursulines Avenue with his mother by now."

It landed hard.

"That's what you've been carrying around?"

"Since September," he said.

"You idiot."

I crossed the music room and took his face in both hands, hard.

"I asked Nadine about you for three days. Three. I asked her who you were, what you did, whether you were cruel. She told me you paid for the roof on St. Augustine, and you never missed a funeral Mass, and you once drove a stranger's mother to the hospital at three in the morning." My thumbs pressed his cheekbones. "I said yes to a man I'd already decided on, because nobody else was going to pay for what Julien did, and because I had looked at you in that kitchen and thought, he won't lie to me."
