Chapter 6: What Molly Said

I read it twice before the screen went dark.

She's yours now. Don't hurt her.

Beside me, Sandro shifted on the pillow.

I shut my eyes and kept my breathing slow.

His hand came off his face.

He reached across me for the phone, and I felt the mattress dip.

He read it, and for a moment he was perfectly still.

Then he set the phone back on the nightstand, face down, and kissed my bare shoulder.

"Sleep," he said quietly, to a woman he thought was sleeping.

I didn't sleep again.

At noon I told him I was going to Molly's to return a dress.

"Take a driver," he said.

"I'd rather take the train. I've done it all my life."

He looked at me over his coffee for a long second.

"Text me when you get there."

"Yes, sir."

"Don't call me that," he said, and he almost smiled.

Molly lived on the third floor of a triple-decker in Dorchester, over a laundromat.

She opened the door in sweatpants with a mug in her hand and her hair in a knot.

"Mar! You're supposed to be on a honeymoon, in a bed, with a man."

"I was," I said. "He's got a text on his phone from you."

The mug stopped halfway to her mouth.

She put it down on the shelf very carefully.

"Come in," Molly said.

Her kitchen smelled of burnt toast.

She sat me at the table and sat across from me, and rubbed both eyes with the heels of her hands.

"He paid me," she said. "Okay? Two years ago."

I waited.

"He came into the pharmacy the week after you left Rocco. Well-dressed, polite, asked if I knew a blonde named Mara Quinlan. I said no. He gave me a card."
