Chapter 18: Fifty-One
"He went down the Ladder," said Garth. "In the dark. In loafers."
"How long ago?" said Elspeth.
"Twenty minutes. It's a fifteen-minute descent if you don't fall."
"And the totes?"
"Insulin for number five, heart pills for two houses, three inhalers," said the woman in the blanket slowly.
"He collected them Thursday," she said. "He said, I'm the president, I'm responsible."
Elspeth shut her eyes briefly, the way she does when a list is complete.
"I'd have remembered every one of those," she said. "I'd have asked him."
"He wouldn't have given them to you."
"No," said Elspeth. "He was keeping them safe from me."
I looked down the road, past the Elbow, to where the mist had reached the gate.
It was white at the bottom of the hill, a long way down, and it was higher than it had any right to be.
"I'll go," I said.
Lucy had her bandaged hand on the bus door.
"With what?" she said.
"The van," I said. "Garth drives, I carry. Fifteen minutes, there and back."
