Chapter 15: My Father's Desk

"Who bought it?" I said.

"I don't know. Some antiques guy. He gave me twelve hundred cash and took it in a van."

"Twelve hundred dollars."

"It had a stuck drawer, Claire."

The officer was standing in the hall behind him.

She'd heard every word.

"Sir," she said. "Did both owners agree to sell that desk?"

Mason turned around.

"It's a desk."

"It was in a house you share. I'd find out where it went before she files a report."

He looked at her, then at me, and then he walked out the back door without another word.

My mother came and stood beside me in the doorway.

She looked at the pale square on the floor for a long time.

"Your father carried that desk up three flights of stairs in our first apartment," she said. "By himself. He wouldn't let the movers touch it."

I didn't trust my voice, so I didn't use it.

That night I called Cooper.

I told him about the desk, and the radio, and the pale square on the floor.

He didn't interrupt once.

When I finished he said, "What does it look like?"

"Oak. Dark. Rolltop, with pigeonholes. Brass pulls. The left drawer sticks. There's a burn mark on the top right corner where my father set down a soldering iron in 1994."
