Chapter 17: The Board
The boardroom of Xu Marine had a long black table, a glass wall onto the harbour, and nine chairs.
Xu Zhengyuan had sat in them for six years without once feeling afraid.
He felt afraid now.
It was not of the vote.
It was of the empty chair at the foot of the table.
An hour ago he had hoped to see a man in a white shirt sitting there.
His collar covered a mark that he had not asked for, and would not have given back.
The secretary came in two minutes before the session, with a brown envelope pressed flat against his ribs.
He sat down beside Xu, slid it under the edge of the folder, and whispered.
"Mu Qing brought it."
Xu's head turned.
"He went straight back," said the secretary. "He said he had a child to collect."
Xu looked at the table.
He did not trust his face for a moment, and he let the first agenda item go by.
"Item one," said Xu Jiahui, from the chair at his right.
He sat there as acting deputy, in a charcoal suit, with his hands folded on a typed sheet.
He looked relaxed.
He had the three directors from his side beside him.
Next to them sat the pale old gentleman from the port authority, who always voted for whoever had spoken last.
"A motion of no confidence in the chairman," said Jiahui, pleasantly.
