Chapter 12: Clause Nine, Mr. Xie
Lanzhou laughed against his mouth.
It was low and helpless, and it shook straight through Yao's chest.
"Fifty thousand yuan," he said. "That's the penalty. I remember."
"You don't have to remember. It's on your side of the contract."
"I'll pay it." His thumb moved along Yao's jaw. "I'd pay it twice."
"Teacher Xie."
"Lanzhou."
"Lanzhou," Yao said, and the name did something warm and dangerous to his stomach. "I need to tell you something."
The thumb stopped.
For one moment Lanzhou's face went careful, and Yao had the strangest impression that he was bracing for a blow.
"After breakfast," Lanzhou said.
"It's important."
"I know."
"It's the kind of thing that changes..."
"Yao." Lanzhou's forehead touched his. "Whatever it is, it keeps. I have waited twenty-six years to do this once, properly, and I would like to finish the thought."
He kissed him again.
This one was slower.
They bumped teeth, apologized into each other's mouths, and tried again.
His hand slid up into Yao's hair and cupped the back of his head, and Yao discovered with a rush of wonder that his own hands knew exactly what to do.
They held a sweater, then a shoulder, then the warm line of a neck.
Neither of them had a plan, and it was the best thing that had ever happened to either of them.
They finally stopped when Yao was breathing and Lanzhou was laughing silently into his collarbone.
