Chapter 17: The Bite

"Because it was never her you were loyal to," I said. "It was a debt."

The snow squeaked under his boots.

"And you've just learned you paid it to the wrong woman for four years. You'd rather owe me than be wrong, and you don't know yet what that feels like."

Anders was quiet.

"I think I do," he said. "It feels like being sick."

"I know."

"I would rather owe you everything." His voice went rough. "I'd rather spend the rest of my life paying you, than one more hour of it to her."

My eyes burned, and I looked away at the black spruce.

"That isn't a thing you can say to me in the snow," I said.

"Then where can I say it?"

I took his hand and walked him home.

The Alpha house was dark and still.

I did not take him to the guest wing, where my rules were.

I took him up the back stair to the room at the end that had been his since he was a boy, and I shut the door and put my back against it.

He stood in the middle of the floor and did not touch me.

"Rule two," I said. "No mark."

"I remember."

"Rule three, no bond."

"I remember that too."

"Overruled," I said.

He crossed the room before the word was finished.

His mouth came down on mine, and this time it was slow, almost shaking.

I took hold of his shirt and tore it open from the collar.

"I won't break," I said into his mouth.

"I know." He laughed, a ragged breath. "God, I know."

He lifted me against the door.

My legs went around his waist, and I felt how ready he was, hard against me through our clothes.
