Chapter 9: All-Hands

The galley went so quiet I could hear the coffee maker ticking.

Forty heads turned toward me.

I put my mug down on the table.

I stood up.

"No," I said.

Amber tilted her head on the screen.

"I'm sorry, Dr. Bevan. This isn't a discussion."

"Then don't discuss it. I'm still not stepping down."

"You don't have the authority to refuse."

"You don't have the authority to relieve me. I work for the Program. You fly the planes."

Her smile didn't move.

"Wexler Polar Services is responsible for the station's medical supply and for the welfare of its crew. A physician who tampers with certified medicine and sends hysterical reports to a nurse in Seattle is a welfare concern."

So she'd read Harriet's email after all.

Harriet, at the end of the table, set her jaw.

I went to the counter, where I'd left my clipboard after breakfast.

I'd brought it to the galley every morning since the gym, in case anybody asked.

"You want to talk about certified medicine?" I said. "Let's talk about it."

I turned to the room, not the screen.

"Epinephrine, lot 4471-B. That's the one I put in the carpenter's leg. It did nothing."

The carpenter, at the second table, raised his hand halfway.

"Amoxicillin, lot 2209-K. Sticker says next year. Real date, two years ago."

"Dr. Bevan," Amber said.

"Silver sulfadiazine, lot 1180-A. That's the burn cream. The cook didn't get it, because I didn't use it."

The cook looked down at his gloved hand.

"Ceftriaxone. Prednisone. Albuterol. Lidocaine."
