Chapter 15: The Study
Joxe did not come up the steps this time either.
He stood at the bottom with his back to the open door.
His reading glasses swung from their cord, and he spoke to the sage.
"Seven o'clock," he said. "My study. Both of you. Dressed."
"Papa," Mikel said, from the bunk, with a quilt over his lap.
"I mean it, Mikel."
"Yes, Papa."
The truck door slammed.
The engine faded down the road, and in the quiet Fionn put his face in his hands and began to laugh until he cried.
"Your father," he said, weakly. "Your father has seen you naked twice."
"He hasn't seen anything." Mikel was laughing too. "He kept his back to us."
"He knows exactly what we were doing."
"He's known since the Ring."
The laughing wore off slowly, and what it left was warm.
Mikel pulled him down into the bunk and held him until the stove went out.
At five in the morning, in the ranch house, they showered together.
Mikel said they should be clean for his father.
Fionn said that was the stupidest reason he had ever heard.
