Chapter 16: The Coach
Bayhill practiced at three on weekdays.
I knew because for two years I'd timed my Sunday notes around Chase's schedule.
On Tuesday at three-fifteen, I walked down the rubber mat to the home bench in my skating jacket.
The whole team was on the ice running a drill. Pucks cracking off the boards.
The head coach was standing on the bench with a whistle and a clipboard.
Bald head. Bayhill quarter-zip. Three years older than the man in the video, and exactly the same.
"Coach," I said.
He didn't look over. "Rink's closed, sweetheart. Figure skating's at six."
"I know when figure skating is. I'm in the Senior Night program."
That made him look.
He knew my face. Everybody in that building knew my face now.
"Miss Keogh." He put on a patient voice. "This isn't the place."
"It's exactly the place."
I said it loud enough to carry.
The drill slowed down. A puck slid into the boards and nobody went after it.
Chase was at the far blue line in a gold practice jersey. He stopped skating and leaned on his stick.
