Chapter 20: Is It There

The front row was so close to the arch that I could have reached out and straightened the groom's boutonniere.

The arch was ten feet of white roses and hydrangeas, with white gauze draped over the top and pooled at the bottom on the grass.

On each side stood a tall iron stand with a pillar candle in a glass hurricane.

In front of it was a little table with three more candles for the unity ceremony, already lit.

Rafferty's mother had insisted on real candles again.

Across the aisle, in the other front row, Rafferty's parents sat side by side and didn't touch.

His father looked at me once and nodded. It wasn't unfriendly.

His mother looked at the arch.

Two hundred people sat on white chairs behind us. Half of them were holding their phones in their laps already, face up, just in case.

Sinead leaned over in her red dress. "They're all here to see if you'll do something."

"I'm not doing anything," I said.

"I know. That's what makes it so creepy."

The string quartet changed songs.

Rafferty came out from the side and took his place under the arch in a white dinner jacket.
