Chapter 11: Hands Above Your Head

By midnight the fever had not come, and Ben took that as permission.

Dario lay on the cot in the dim office with his stitched shoulder wrapped in clean linen and one lamp burning.

He watched Ben come back from the sink with the oil.

It was a small bottle of olive oil from the grandmother's shelf.

"That's not what you bought," Dario said.

"It's what we have."

"Ben. You don't have to."

"Don't tell me what I have to." Ben set the bottle on the floor, pulled his shirt off over his head, and knelt on the cot beside Dario's hip. "Lie back."

"I am lying back."

"Further."

Dario slid down, and the thin mattress dipped.

Ben looked at him in the lamplight, all that pale broad body marked with scars old and new.

The rosary tattoo on his wrist lay open on the blanket.

He felt something swell in his chest he had no name for.

He reached out and took Dario's wrists in his hands.

"Up."

Dario lifted his arms over his head, slowly, and winced as the left shoulder pulled.

"Not that one," Ben said. He laid the left arm gently along the pillow and drew the right one up beside it, and then he wrapped his fingers around both wrists and pinned them to the cot above Dario's head.
