Chapter 14: His Bed

Dane's POV

I took it back at eight that morning, which was four hours later than I should have.

The lawyer had sat in his bathrobe at his own kitchen table with the laptop wrapped in a dish towel in front of him, and he had made two phone calls and written four lines on a legal pad.

Then he told me to go home and not touch the machine and not say a word to anyone about it.

He told me I had a witness in my house who had handed me the evidence of her own free will, and that I had better not have treated her like a suspect.

I drove home with the windows down and my face burning.

The lane was white with early sun.

From the end of it I saw her on the porch swing, alone, with her boots on the boards and my mother's shotgun nowhere in sight.

She watched me park.

She didn't get up.

I walked up the steps and stood in front of her with my hat in my hand, and I said it plain.

"I was wrong."

She looked at me.

"I was scared, and it came out as an accusation," I said.

"You were not the one who did a wrong thing in that kitchen.

"You were the one who did the right one.

"I stood at my own front door and said a thing I knew was a lie, because I'd rather it be your fault than mine."

"Yours?" she said.

"I'm his boss," I said.

"He sold for my company for four years.

"He sat in my office and shook my hand.

"Cody's been paying a man on my own payroll to watch my sister's child sleep.

"I should have seen it, and I didn't, and then you did, and it was easier to be angry at you."

She was quiet.

The swing creaked.

"My mother told me about your sister," she said.

"I know," I said.

"She told me she was going to."

"She told me about the note under the magnet," Katrina said.

"Katrina."

"I want to hear why you didn't give me your name at the dance hall," she said.

"You've had two weeks to tell me, and you haven't.

"I think it matters."

I had wanted her to ask.

I had not wanted to answer, and I sat down on the swing beside her and put my hat on my knee.
