Chapter 8: The Note
Neil pushed the study door open.
Jude was standing at the window with the phone to his ear, and he turned around so fast that he dropped it.
"I'll call you back," he told it.
The phone hit the rug.
"Who can never find out what?" Neil said.
"Neil."
"Britt says you told your father you'd buy my family's yard."
Jude's face changed.
"She told you that."
"She brought me decaf and told me. Is that why you moved into my house?"
"No."
"Is that why you were in my bed?"
"Don't you say that." Jude's voice shook. "Don't make last night into that."
"Then tell me who can never find out what."
Jude shut his eyes.
When he opened them he looked tired and older, and the scar over his eye stood out white.
"I can tell you the yard part," he said. "Not the other."
"Start with the yard."
"Your cousin has been buying minority shares through a holding company for a year. My father found out last week. He wanted to buy them first, to break Ansel's position. I told Dad I'd buy the whole yard before he'd touch you."
Neil stared at him.
"Ansel."
"I don't know what he wants. I only know the shares are real."
"Ansel is my cousin."
"I know."
"He drove me home yesterday. He brought me coffee."
"I know that too."
"You're accusing him of something because you hate him."
"I don't hate him." Jude took a step closer. "I don't trust a man who smiles that much."
It sounded so much like the old fight that Neil laughed, short and bitter.
