Chapter 14: Feathers
"Where are they?" I said.
Two older guests at the next table looked up from their eggs.
Kayleigh blew on her tea.
"Where are what?"
"My sketchbooks. You were in my room."
"Hal, I'm staying here. Preston's parents booked the whole third floor of the Harbor Hotel, and I wanted somewhere quiet." She smiled wider. "Isn't it a small world?"
"Give them back."
"I don't know what you're talking about." She stood and picked up her purse. "But I'd hate for you to show up on stage with nothing. That would be so embarrassing for Bellgrave."
She walked past me and out the front door.
Malik was coming down the stairs.
He took one look at my face and knew.
"All of them?"
"All eleven."
He went to the front desk.
The clerk, a kid about our age, went white.
"A blonde girl said she was on your team," he stammered. "Last night. She said her friend was asleep and she'd locked herself out. She knew the room number. She knew your name."
"She followed us from the quad," Malik said.
