Chapter 17: The Auction Bed
His bed was on the third floor of Honorine's house, under a ceiling fan, behind a door he had never opened for anyone but himself.
I shut it behind us and turned the key.
"You're not going to ask me what I want," Anson said.
"No."
"You're going to tell me."
"Take off your shirt and sit on the edge of the bed," I said. "Hands on your knees."
He sat.
It was a plain iron bed with a white coverlet, a book on the nightstand and a lamp.
He kept his hands where I had told him, and the light from the lamp lay along his shoulder.
I took a ribbon from my pocket.
It was an inch wide, dark green, cut from a spool of lot tags I had brought from the barn that afternoon.
I held it up so he could see it.
"What's that?" he said.
"The price."
"Detty."
"You said you'd tell me what you want out loud, and I said I'd tell you what it costs." I stepped between his knees. "I've decided. Close your eyes."
He closed them.
I folded the ribbon in half and laid it across his eyes and tied it behind his head.
My fingers shook a little on the knot.
His breath went out in a rough sound against my wrist.
"Too tight?" I said.
"No."
"If you want it off, you take it off."
"I won't," he said.
"Good."
I stood back and looked at him.
He sat on the edge of his own bed, bare to the waist, blindfolded in a ribbon from my barn, with his hands on his knees and a line of tension running down his arms.
I had never wanted anything so much in my life.
"I'm going to undress," I said. "You can't see it. You can only listen."
"Christ," he said.
"Don't speak unless I ask you a question."
