Chapter 12: The Last Page

I took the page out of her hand and held it under the lamp.

It was a sale agreement, typed in tight black lines.

"Nolan Tierney releases all claim to Camille Ashworth," it said, "in exchange for the sum of one million dollars, paid in full."

The date was the Tuesday a week after the crash.

I knew that Tuesday.

It was the day I signed on as the hired man.

"Look at the signature," Camille said.

"I'm looking."

"That's your handwriting."

"It is."

"Then you signed it."

"I signed something that day," I said. "Not this."

I ran my thumb along the bottom of the page.

The ink was dark and thick, and there was a heavy double stroke on the crossbar of the T where my pen had slipped.

I remembered that slip.

I remembered Gerald's black fountain pen, which was too heavy, and how it skidded when I signed.

I remembered Gerald saying, "Just here, on the last page, Tierney. Initials and signature. The lawyer will attach it to the rest."

I remembered Lucille pouring tea and telling me I was doing something wonderful.

"It was a page on its own," I said.

"What?"

"Gerald handed me one page. It had a line for my name and a line for my initials, and nothing above them. He said the lawyer would staple it to the rest of my staff agreement."

"You signed a blank page?"

"I signed a page I thought was the end of my contract." I turned the sheet toward her. "I had been awake for four days. I'd just been told the woman I loved had forgotten me and I could only see her if I took a job in her house. I'd have signed anything they put in front of me."
