Chapter 14: Silvan
Silvan read all six rows to the drone, and nobody in the yard spoke until he reached the last one.
He did not raise his voice once.
When he finished he lowered the tablet and the drone's red light blinked, and every trooper at the pot stood very still.
The High Marshal looked at the lens for a long moment.
"Return to the ships," he said to the ring. "The Assembly will hear this in its proper place."
The troopers went back up the ramps slowly, with their bowls still in their hands.
Alden went up last, and he did not look at Maxine.
The flagship lifted into the orange dark and climbed toward orbit, and the rain stopped.
That night the library on the Resolute was warm and dim, and it smelled of old paper that was not paper.
Isak had cut the dead implants out of six of the seven men by lamplight.
Jory's turn was in the morning.
Maxine came in with a cup of chive tea and found Silvan at his reading desk.
His white hair hung loose down his back to the floor.
He had set out three ledgers, a lamp, and a neat sheet of paper.
"Madam," he said, rising. "I prepared a list."
"Of what?"
"Reasons." He turned the sheet toward her. "There are nineteen."
