On the sixteenth of March the Finns of the Copper Country put on green and purple and drove the grasshoppers out of Finland.
There were no grasshoppers in Michigan in March, and nobody cared.
By noon the Dry was loud with it.
Mummu's sauna court had come in from Toivola with a long table of pulla and a keg of home-brewed kalja.
The Finnish men wore purple sashes, and the women wore green kerchiefs.
The Cornish wives had brought saffron buns and an opinion of the pulla, which they ate anyway.
In the middle of the floor, a ring of benches had been pushed back for the wrestling.
Cornish and Finnish men took hold of one another by the jackets and went at it, grunting, while the French cheered for whoever was losing.
A big Cornish plowman put a Finnish welder on his back, and the whole Dry roared.
At the long table, thirty-one men in clean shirts sat down to eat.
They had come down from the pile in the early light, scrubbed and wary, and they did not know where to put their hands.
