Chapter 11: Midnight

Wynne's POV

It began to snow at dusk on my twenty-sixth birthday.

Nobody in the house said the word birthday.

I had not expected them to, because nobody ever had.

I came back from the clinic with my last pay in an envelope and my ID in my pocket.

I was humming in the hall, which I had never done in any house in my life.

The sergeant met me at the library door.

He would not look at me.

"The colonel wants you, ma'am," he said.

Lorne stood at the far window with his back to me.

He did not turn when I came in.

A laptop sat open on the desk, and on its screen was a frozen picture of a woman at the wheel of a car.

"Close the door," he said.

I closed it.

"Come and look."

I walked to the desk and looked.

It was my braid and my gray coat.

It was my face, under a dome light, on a road at 12:52 in the morning.

My own eyes looked back at me out of a dark windshield, and my legs went unsteady.

"That is not me," I said.

"It looks like you."

"I know it looks like me. It isn't. I was in the Haldanes' pantry at that hour, scrubbing a floor, and Joanne can say so."

"Joanne Haldane will say what her husband tells her to." His voice was perfectly flat. "Who else saw you?"

"Nobody. I was alone, because I was always alone."

"Convenient."

"Lorne, look at the left cuff of the coat." I put my finger on the screen. "I burned it on the oven door in March. There's a brown scorch, here, you can see it on my own coat in the hall. It isn't on this one."
