Chapter 15: A Silence Described
Dorian took the six-forty train from Hereford on the Sunday, with his satchel, his binder, and a plan that had not survived Paddington.
The plan had been to walk into the theatre in Hackney and ask to see The Salt Road.
The theatre was shut.
He pressed the buzzer at the stage door and waited in the drizzle, composing a speech about his career.
A man in a fleece opened it by a hand's width.
"We're closed," said the man.
"Are you the plumber?"
"I am an actor," said Dorian.
"I performed here, some years ago."
"Right," said the man, and looked at him properly.
"You're off the crime one. My mother likes you."
"I'm so glad," said Dorian, and heard himself say thank you to a stranger for a thing he had never earned.
He stopped.
"I was in The Salt Road," he said instead.
"I was the lighthouse keeper. I'd like to see it, if anything of it was ever kept."
The man looked at him for some time.
"Wait there," he said, and shut the door.
