Chapter 23: Understudy of Nothing
The first thing the Curtain Call Board said to Kit was that his own name was taken.
He had tried to join under it.
"It's a man in Ohio," said Kit.
"He's never posted. He's been dead to the world since two thousand and nine."
"Can he be removed?" said Dorian.
"Not without a form."
They were in the flat in Walthamstow, on a sofa with a spring in it.
The laptop sat on a pouffe, and Hollowmere episode one was already two days old.
Kit's flatmate had come into the kitchen and eaten a yoghurt without looking at either of them.
He had gone out again with an air of principled neutrality.
The yoghurt had been Kit's.
"Put in a bracket," said Dorian.
"Kit Waincroft, bracket, actor."
Kit typed it.
The board accepted it with a small green tick, and a cursor blinked in the box marked New Review.
He had never been so afraid of a text field.
Seventh Row had been a seat, and a seat does not have an opinion of its own face.
"What are you going to say?" said Dorian.
