Chapter 8: The Statement

At ten on Monday morning I stood on the lawn at Maple Court in a navy dress, holding a statement I'd agreed to read.

Grady stood at my shoulder in his gray suit, and the fixer stood two steps behind him.

On the grass in front of us there were three cameras, six reporters and a podcaster in a bucket hat.

Lacey stood by the hydrangeas with her hands folded in front of her.

I had slept two hours in a chair at my mother's home and washed my face in a staff bathroom.

I felt fine.

That was the strange part.

I felt better than I had in ten months, because for the first time I knew what I was holding.

"Good morning," I said. "I'll read a short statement, and then my husband will take two questions."

Every microphone lifted toward me.

"I have complete confidence in my husband's fidelity," I read. "I have compassion for the young woman involved and for her family. The Lindemanns are praying for her. She is receiving care."

I read every line in a warm, even voice.

Grady's hand settled on the small of my back and rubbed once, in approval.

Across the lawn, at the back by the oak, a tall man in a gray jacket stood with his arms crossed and a steel watch on his wrist.

He wasn't wearing a press badge.

He looked at me, and one corner of his mouth moved.

I looked away fast, because I was supposed to be a wife.

"Thank you," I finished. "My husband."

Grady stepped to the microphones.

He was good at it.
