Chapter 20: Homecoming

"Your voice is on it," I said.

Danielle stood on her mother's lawn in her socks and nodded.

"I know."

"He says all of it," Danielle said.

"Where he wanted Lucinda, and what he thought of me, and the flyers."

"Mine too," she added.

"I laughed along."

Jude shut his eyes.

I took the phone out of her hand and sent the file to my own.

"Homecoming is Saturday," I said.

Danielle's mouth trembled.

"Everyone will be there."

"That's the idea," I said.

On Saturday the stadium was loud, red and gold, and packed to the top row.

I sat in the student section with Cam on one side and Jude on the other, and a speaker the size of a toaster in my lap.

Cam had borrowed it from the chemistry department, where it normally played audio for lecture demos.

"It's loud," he said.

"It'd better be," I said.

Brock sat eleven rows below us with the lacrosse team, in his team jacket, laughing too hard.

He had been told to show up, and he was showing up.

Danielle sat across the aisle with her sorority sisters in a block of matching scarves.

Her chin was up, and her eyes were red.

At halftime the band marched out and the whole crowd stood.

I climbed onto the bench.
