Chapter 30: The Mark
"Just you and me," I said. "On the full moon. On a mountain full of wolves."
"The pack runs the south ridge," Judd said. "I'm taking you north."
"Into the north timber."
"It's ours again." He leaned in the doorframe. "Say yes, Liesel. I've knocked on this door for six months."
"Yes."
Friday night he drove me up the old logging road through the north timber with the windows down.
The air smelled like pine and snowmelt.
The moon came up over the ridge as we climbed, huge and gold, then white.
Somewhere on the far side of the mountain, the pack was running.
I could hear them now and then, a long howl coming over the ridge and fading.
He stopped at the top of the road, where the trees opened into a high meadow.
Below us, the whole valley lay spread out in the dark.
The town. The river road. The clinic on Clinic Road.
Every light down there ran through wire I'd climbed.
"I wanted you to see it from here," Judd said.
We sat on the tailgate with a blanket over our knees.
He'd brought the two mugs and a thermos of coffee.
Cream, no sugar.
"You're nervous," I said.
"I'm not nervous."
"Your knee's going."
He put his hand on his knee to stop it.
"I want to ask you something," he said. "It's not the question you think."
"Okay."
"When a wolf finds his mate, he marks her. Here." He touched the place where my neck met my left shoulder, through my flannel. "With his teeth. It scars. It doesn't come off. Every wolf who ever meets you knows you're mine, and every wolf who meets me knows I'm yours."
I didn't say anything.
"You don't have a wolf," he said. "You don't have to want it. A wolfless woman never got asked, because nobody up here thought a wolfless woman got a mate."
