Chapter 7: Glass

I photographed the page, then the next one, then every other page in the box.

My hands were not steady anymore.

The first sheet said what I had always known and Tim had made me doubt.

I had been there at the start, with my name typed in the same type as his.

I needed one person to see it who could not say I had made it up.

I called the number on the back of the card.

"Hartigan."

"It's Hannah Brecker. I'm in a storage unit in Red Hook, and I found the angel agreement. It lists me as cofounder. Tim signed it."

There was a silence on the line so complete I thought the call had dropped.

"Send me the address," he said. "Don't touch anything else."

"I already touched all of it."

"Then don't touch it again."

He hung up.

I stood in the cold bulb light and made the mistake of picking up a glass frame from the desk.

It was the photo from the garage again, a second print, the one Tim had kept at home when we moved.

The glass was already cracked.

It split along the crack in my hand and opened a clean line across my palm.

I said a word Dorothy would not have liked.

The blood was bright and came fast.

I pressed my other hand over it and stood very still.

That is how Colter found me twenty-five minutes later, in the doorway of Unit 114 with a paper towel soaking red.

He took one look and swore too.

"Sit," he said. "On the desk. Don't argue."

"I wasn't going to."

"You were about to."

I sat.

He went out and came back from his trunk with a first aid kit and a bottle of water.
