Chapter 15: The Invitation
Abel stood in the penthouse kitchen with the courier envelope on the counter and his hands behind his back.
He had not looked at my face once.
I had pulled on Cal's grey sweater with nothing under it, and I could feel exactly how far down it came.
Cal sat on the stool beside me with his hand on my knee.
"Open it," he said.
"It's addressed to me."
"Which is why you open it."
The card was cream, heavy, and the writing was the same blue ink.
Mrs. Ransome.
Supper at my house on the thirtieth, at eight.
Only the family.
I like to look at a man's wife the night before I sit him down.
The table is the next evening. Wear something you can stand in. G.S.
I read it out loud.
Nobody said anything.
"He wants to look at you," Abel said finally. "Judge you. See if you break."
