Chapter 15: The Notebook
Darius was on the forty-first floor by seven, with two hours to take apart a vote.
He read the bylaws standing up in his office, with a coffee he did not drink.
A shareholder vote needed seven days' written notice.
Pauline had given eight hours, and she had called it an emergency session of the executive committee.
The clause she had used was real, and it had been written for a dying founder.
He found the director in the gray suit at the end of the corridor, staring out at the river.
The man had looked at his hands through all of Elsie's first board meeting.
"Why is this vote today?" Darius asked.
"I wasn't asked to say."
"Nobody asked you to say anything. I'm asking you."
The man turned from the window.
His face was gray too, and tired.
"Two members of this board received consulting agreements last month," he said. "Eighty thousand dollars each, paid by something called the Marie Foundation."
"Whose foundation?"
"The signature on the letterhead is Pauline's."
"And you?"
"They sent me one as well." His mouth twisted. "I haven't signed it. I've been trying to decide whether I'm a coward."
"Sign nothing," Darius said. "And when I ask for a count of hands, be in the room."
"For which side?"
"The one you'd want your daughter on."
The director nodded slowly.
Darius went into the empty washroom at the end of the hall and shut the door, because he needed one minute without a face on.
He took the notebook out of his inside pocket.
It was black, soft at the corners, and swollen with use.
He had filled it over three years, and he had never shown it to anyone.
He turned the pages.
Milwaukee, fourteen pharmacies, no.
Madison, the university hospital, no.
