Chapter 14: The Lender
Friday at noon, every stool at Rasmussen's was taken.
Peg had not told a soul, which meant the whole town knew.
I tied my apron and carried a tray of coffee down the counter.
Across Main Street, a white ranch truck sat at the curb with its engine off.
Boone was in it, with his hat low.
He had not come in.
He had not called, and he had not sent a message through anyone.
I had told him I needed a week, and he was giving me every hour of it.
I looked away from the truck and kept pouring.
The gray pickup pulled up at five past twelve.
The man in the suede jacket walked in with two big men behind him and sat in the corner booth.
"Pie," he said to me, pleasant as a Sunday. "Whatever you've got. And a chair for my friend when he comes."
His friend came at ten past.
Dalton walked in with a new haircut, a pressed blue shirt and a smile that fell apart halfway across the room.
