Chapter 14: The Banner
Pia opened her bedroom door before I had finished knocking.
"Tell me everything," she said. "Start with the part where you did not get thrown in a pool."
"Do you still have your old phone?"
She blinked.
"The cracked one? It's in my desk drawer with eleven charging cords and a retainer." She went and dug. "Why?"
"Because in May Dane told you to clear your storage."
"He said my phone was slow. He's the one who told me to buy a new one, and then he told me to wipe the old one before I gave it to my cousin." She held it up with both hands. "I didn't wipe it. I didn't give it to anyone. I just forgot."
"You forgot."
"I forget everything that isn't a person." She plugged it in, and the screen stayed black. "Give it a minute. It's old, it's sulking."
Robby sat on the edge of the desk chair with his hands between his knees.
He had come in without being asked and said hello to Pia's cat, and the cat had allowed it.
The phone buzzed on the desk.
Pia grabbed it and typed in a code with her thumb.
"I never changed the cloud login on this thing," she said. "It's still signed in. Everything I got before May should be in here."
"Look for March."
"Which day?"
"The week I reported her. Look for anything I sent you with a screenshot."
She scrolled and I leaned over her shoulder.
There was a photo of Pia's cat in a mailing box, and a photo of a pizza, and a long run of pictures of a bus stop sign for reasons I could not guess.
