Chapter 28: The Last Bride

"His socks," Cosima breathed. "Jemma. His socks."

"I measured twice," I said.

She put her fist in her mouth so she wouldn't laugh through the curtain.

At eight o'clock exactly the lights went down over the gold chairs.

The room went quiet.

The creative director walked to the end of the runway in her black dress with her glasses on their chain.

"Three weeks ago a seamstress in Bay Ridge drew a gown on a blank sheet in my office in ten minutes," she said.

"Tonight you'll see what she drew after that. The collection is called Cregan. It's her name. It's on every card."

She stepped aside.

The music started, low strings and a piano.

Gran stood up from the mirror.

She smoothed the dove-gray silk over her hips with her good hand.

"Well," she said to me. "Don't just stand there. Do my sleeve."

I did up the six covered buttons over her cast.

Then she walked out into the light.

She didn't hurry.

She walked down the middle of that runway at seventy-four, her chin up, her cast hidden in silk.
