Chapter 30: Wedding Silk

"Starting with mine," I said.

"The tenant gets the first offer," the manager said. "That's you. If you want it, you have until the fifteenth of December."

"How much?"

She told me.

I sat down on Gran's stool by the radio.

It was less than a building on Fifth Avenue had any right to cost, because the bank wanted it gone before Christmas.

"I'll call you back," I said.

Gran was standing at the bottom of the stairs in her housecoat, with her cast in its sling.

"How much?" she said.

I told her.

She went back upstairs without a word.

She came back down five minutes later with a blue credit union book in her good hand and set it on the cutting table.

"Forty-one years of hems," she said. "Your grandfather's insurance. Every Christmas tip from the Thursday ladies."

I opened it.

I closed it again.

"Gran, that's everything you have."

"It's everything I've got in a book. The rest is in the walls." She tapped the table. "Plus your advance. Plus the second half."

The creative director had wired the second half of my advance on Sunday morning, with a one-line email.
