Chapter 10: Fort Adams
Vovo was sitting at the kitchen table in a quilted bathrobe with one slipper in her lap when we ran in.
The harbor master sat across from her, a gray man in a windbreaker, holding a cup of her coffee in both hands.
There was a fresh scuff on the plaster beside the door, about the height of a man's head.
"I threw it," Vovo said, nodding at the slipper. "Not at him. At the other one."
"The other one?" Tiago said.
"The suit." She spat the word.
"He came at midnight with this one."
She jerked her chin at the harbor master.
"He said Tiago must give up the license, quietly, for the good of the family. He put an envelope on my table."
She pushed it across with one finger.
I opened it.
Inside were twenty one-hundred-dollar bills and a card with the name of a Providence law firm on it.
I knew the firm was Crispin's.
"Fifty thousand dollars is the next envelope," Vovo said. "He told me. Fifty for the house, for a quiet boy."
"Ma'am," the harbor master said unhappily, "I only came because I was asked. I've known your grandson since he was fourteen."
"And you came at midnight."
"I was asked."
"By whom?" I said.
He looked into his coffee.
I put the envelope down in front of him.
"Please return this to the man who gave it to you," I said, "with the compliments of the Tillinghast estate."
He nodded slowly.
"And tell him the review on Friday will have twenty witnesses."
"Twenty?" he said.
"Every launch driver in Newport. They'll all be in the room. In their oilskins."
