Chapter 19: Fever
"She's a woman who walked out of a hospital before the law could talk to her," Nils said on the radio. "Now she's telling stories. I'd ask my listeners to leave my family alone and pray for my niece."
The nurse looked over at us from the station.
She reached for the dial and turned him off.
"Sorry, hon," she said. "I'm switching to the country station."
Erik stood up.
He stood in the middle of the lounge with his hands hanging at his sides.
"Pray for my niece," he said. "He said that."
"Erik."
"On the air. 'Pray for my niece.'"
He picked up his coat.
"Where are you going?"
"He's on till nine. I'll be there at nine."
"Don't hit him."
"I'm not going to hit him."
"You've got that face."
"It's the only face I've got."
He bent and kissed me, hard and fast.
Then he went to 614 and stood at the glass and looked at Ingrid for a full minute.
She was asleep.
Her cheeks were pink.
I thought it was a good sign.
He went into her room and took something off the windowsill.
When he came out, I had my coat on.
"Jodie's got her," I said. "I'm coming. Somebody has to stop you hitting him."
