Chapter 24: Dismissed

His fingers dug into my arm hard enough to bruise.

Seven years ago this same hand had held out four hundred dollars.

I didn't pull away.

I turned all the way around so I was facing him, close enough to smell the arena on his suit.

"Her name is Ingrid Skoglund Haugland," I said. "She picked it herself. On Christmas Eve. She wanted both."

His grip tightened.

"She can keep the Haugland," I said. "It's her father's name, and her uncle's. Yours is the one up there on a banner nobody's going to raise."

The security guards reached us.

One of them took Dag's wrist and peeled his fingers off my arm one at a time.

Dag let him.

There were people in the corridor now.

Ushers.

A beer vendor with a tray.

A dad holding a little boy in a Voyageurs jersey, who stared up at Dag with his mouth open.

Dag saw the boy.

For one second his face went loose and old.

Then the guards walked him away down the corridor, and he didn't turn around.

Erik came over the boards.

He didn't use the gate.

He vaulted the bench in full gear and landed on the rubber mat on his skates and nearly went down.

He caught himself on the wall.
