Chapter 15: Day Fifty

Asa's POV

I read her text four days running.

Day 88. Hold out your hand.

Greer had told me not to phone her, and I kept to it, and by day fifty I was sleeping in my clothes on the lake house sofa with the phone on my chest.

June found me there at seven in the morning, still in her scrubs from the night shift.

"You look like something I'd scrape off a floor," she said.

"She's with him."

"I know."

"Thirteen nights. She sent me one line and nothing else."

"I know, Asa."

"What if she meant it?"

June set a coffee in front of me and sat on the table, which she knew I hated.

"She came to my kitchen last Sunday," she said. "She stood on the step for a full minute and left without knocking. I watched her from the window."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you'd have gone after her. You've got a face that tells everything, and Darren is not stupid."

"I'm not going after her."

"Good."

"I'm going to the diner. It's Thursday, and he takes her for breakfast on Thursdays."

"How do you know that?"

"The whole town knows. He tells it to everyone."

She looked at me for a long moment, and then she picked up her keys.

"I'm driving," she said. "And you will keep your mouth shut."

We parked on Main Street across from the gallery.

Through the diner window I saw them at the corner booth: Darren in a camel coat with his arm along the seat back, Greer under it in her gray dress.
