Chapter 13: Out Through the Gate
I did not sit down.
I looked at the blue cover on the blotter between us, and then at my father's hand resting beside the bell.
He was fifty-eight and heavy, and he had never once in his life lifted a finger to hurt me himself.
That was what the bell was for.
"The guards will not mark your face," he said. "I'll tell them. You'll be comfortable."
"Like a deposit," I said.
I snatched the contract off the desk and shoved it inside my jacket against my ribs.
I grabbed Adamo's phone off the blotter with the other hand.
"Fabiola, put that down."
"Say it louder, Papa. Let the hall hear."
The deadbolt behind me clicked again.
The door opened a hand's width, and one of the guards looked in.
"Nobody comes in," my father said, quick and low, because a Don does not let his men see him argue.
That was one second.
I turned and ran for the window.
It was a tall sash window, and the lock was a brass thumb turn that I had played with as a child.
