Chapter 12: Eleven Nights
The gun was heavier than I remembered.
I carried it up the dark stairs in both hands.
His shirt hung past my thighs, and the floor was cold under my bare feet.
His bedroom door stood open.
The lamp was on.
He was not asleep.
He sat in the leather armchair by the window, shirtless, with his elbows on his knees.
A glass of water stood on the floor beside him.
The sheet on the bed behind him lay thrown back, still warm, I thought, where I had been.
He looked at the revolver and then at my face.
"Took you eleven nights," he said.
I stopped in the doorway.
"What?"
"I thought it would take you three."
My arms came up.
I pointed the gun at his bare chest, right over the old bullet scar, and my hands shook so hard that the barrel drew circles.
"Don't move."
"I'm not moving."
"You knew?"
"Janelle," he said, very gently. "Go on."
I thumbed back the hammer.
It clicked, loud in the silence.
"Why aren't you afraid?" My voice broke. "I'm going to do it. I came here to do it. I walked into Rosso's to do it."
