Chapter 16: The Other Girl
She sat at Rosa's kitchen table in a white wool coat with snow melting off the collar, holding a mug in both hands.
It was one in the morning.
Rosa had put her own robe over her pajamas and was heating milk, and nobody had asked the girl a single question yet.
Up close she was younger than she had looked in the white dress.
Her hair was pinned in a careless knot, and her face had no makeup, and her eyes were red.
"I walked from the bus stop," she said. "I didn't want my father's driver to know."
"You're twenty-two," Luciano said.
He stood against the counter with his arms folded, in a robe and trousers, with his face closed.
"I am," she said. "And my father still decides what I wear to church."
"What do you want, Miss Marchetti?"
"I don't want to marry you."
Nobody moved.
Then Rosa put down the pot and said, "Oh, thank God."
The girl blinked.
Rosa pointed her wooden spoon at the ceiling.
"Not that you're not lovely, honey, you're lovely. But my brother has a woman upstairs who bites, and I've grown very fond of the noise."
I choked on my tea.
The girl looked at me, and for the first time a small, shaky smile crossed her face.
"I saw you at the table," she said. "On his lap. Everybody thought I'd be jealous."
"Were you?"
"I wanted to stand up and clap."
She put the mug down.
"Mr. Brusco came to my father two years ago," she said. "He told him the Ferrante crown was crooked and he could straighten it. All my father had to do was give me away."
