Chapter 15: Penthouse
The tower stood at the north end of the Strip, and the elevator to the top took forty seconds.
It had a private button with no number on it.
Tobin put in a key that matched mine, and the doors opened on a hall of pale stone.
"Go ahead," he said. "Look at all of it."
I walked in slowly in Gran's green dress.
The living room was bigger than my mother's whole house.
One wall was glass, and the Strip lay under it.
The kitchen had a range with eight burners and a marble island long enough to roll out dough for forty pies.
"That's a Bonnet range," I said.
"I don't know what that means."
"It means you've had a stove like this for years and never boiled anything on it."
"I boil pasta."
"On a stove like that?"
"I felt bad for it," he said.
I laughed so hard I had to hold the island.
In the closet his canvas jackets hung in a row, the same tan jacket six times.
A framed photo of Gran in a bathing cap sat on the dresser, next to a mug of pens.
That was all the personal he had.
It was a rich man's home, and it had nothing in it except him.
