Chapter 23: Heat Wave
The air conditioner in my mother's house gave out at nine o'clock, with a cough.
By ten, the thermostat said ninety-one.
The neighbors had gone home from the party hours ago, and Gran had gone home in a site crew's van with the brisket pan on her lap.
Tobin and I stood in the back bedroom with the window open and the curtains hanging dead.
"I'll fix it," he said.
"It's eleven at night."
"It's bothering me."
"You're not touching that unit," I said. "You're not touching anything but me."

His eyebrows went up when I cracked one cube into my palm.
"Take off your shirt," I said.
He did it with one hand behind his neck, the way he always did.
The sweat on his chest caught the lamp.
I pressed the ice to the hollow of his throat, and he sucked in a breath.
