Chapter 29: The Sentence
Every torch on the ridge turned toward me.
My hand was bleeding. My sock was red. I was still wet from the river.
I'd never been less ready to make a speech.
"Jagger," I said.
He was still on his knees in the snow.
"You told me at the altar I was nobody here. You told the gallery your brother was a cripple. You sent him up that pass and you cut him from behind with your father's knife."
He didn't lift his head.
"I don't want you dead," I said. "I've spent three years keeping people in this pack alive. I'm not starting with you."
I looked at the Elder.
"There's an outpost at Sawtooth. One cabin, one stove, the north wind. Somebody has to watch that pass all winter."
The Elder looked at Granger.
Granger nodded once.
"Alone," Granger said.
The Elder turned to the man on his knees.
"By the founders' law, a brother who draws on the heir is no brother. You'll leave the name Blackburn on this rock." His voice shook and then didn't. "You'll hold Sawtooth Pass, alone, on rations, until the pack says otherwise. You'll watch the place where you left him in the snow."
