Chapter 16: Plaster
The detective turned the phone back around and looked at it himself.
"It says Nicholas Scarpa."
"Anybody can print a name. That crown is porcelain. I seated it in October in the mouth of a twenty-six-year-old boy who drives for Nicky." My voice was steady. My hands weren't. "Nicky has a gold onlay on that tooth. I did it four years ago, the month before our wedding. Gold shows up white on a film. Solid white. There's no white on that tooth."
"Who's the boy?"
"His driver. Ask his mother where her son is."
He wrote it down.
"Nobody's reported a driver missing, Doctor."
"Then nobody's asked her."
Dom stood up.
He walked out of the living room without a word and shut the study doors behind him.
The detective watched him go.
"I'll look into it," he said, in the voice people use for a dog that won't stop barking.
When the house finally emptied, it was ten at night.
I opened the study doors without knocking.
Dom stood at the window with his back to me.
"Stop," he said.
"I haven't said anything."
"You're going to."
"Dom. It's not him."
He turned around.
His face had gone old in two days. The lines at his eyes had gotten deeper.
"Do you understand what you're telling me?" he said, very quietly. "If that isn't my son in that car, then my son put somebody else in it. A boy. And set him on fire."
"Yes."
"You want me to hope for that."
"I want you to look at it."
"I looked at it. I looked at his ring in a plastic bag."
"Rings come off."
"Twenty-six years old," he said. "You said it yourself. A kid with a mother."
"Yes."
"My son did that." He shook his head slowly. "No. I can bury a son. I can't bury that."
