Chapter 20: The Lake
Dom didn't answer him.
He put his hand on the small of my back and walked me to his car, and opened my door, and closed it.
Augie stood on the asphalt and watched us go.
Dom drove out of the industrial park without a word.
At the highway he turned south instead of north.
"Where are we going?"
"His mother's cabin." His hands were tight on the wheel. "When he was a kid and he was in trouble, he went to the lake. He'd call her from the dock and she'd drive down and bring him home."
"You think he's there."
"I think he was."
It was three hours to the Lake of the Ozarks.
At a gas station outside Clinton I made him stop.
I came back with two coffees, a bag of beef jerky and a pecan log the size of my forearm.
He looked at the pecan log.
"That's not food."
"I'm a dentist. I know exactly what it is. Eat half."
He ate half.
Somewhere past Warsaw, with the hills getting greener and the radio playing a Royals game nobody was listening to, he started talking.
