Chapter 24: Altoona
My mother met my husband on the sidewalk outside the Lutheran church hall in Altoona, at eleven on Saturday morning, in an apron.
She was fifty-five, five foot two and built like a woman who carries trays for a living.
She looked Truman up and down, from his broken nose to his borrowed good shoes.
"You're big," she said.
"Yes, ma'am."
"You eat?"
"I try to."
"Come here."
She took his wrist in a hand and walked him inside, past the folding tables and the paper tablecloths, to the kitchen pass-through.
"Three hundred and ten lunches," she said. "The ladies are short a man for the steam table."
I opened my mouth.
"Don't," said Truman, quietly, and took the apron she held out.
It was blue plastic with a school-district logo, and it did not close across his back.
He tied it anyway.
For the next hour, my husband stood behind a steam table in a church hall with his sleeves rolled to the elbow, ladling green beans into foam trays.
He said "Yes, ma'am" to eleven cafeteria ladies and one retired principal, and he dropped nothing.
I stood at the end of the line and counted the trays.
