Chapter 28: Open the Gate

The yard went quiet.

Hundreds of people turned round in the sleet to look at the black car.

I came out through the inner gate and stood on the painted stripe Sable had copied from the Gate.

Brand came up beside me in human shape, bare to the waist, steaming, with a cut over one eye.

Ottoline's eyes moved over him and back to me.

"Mrs. Tarrant," she said. "I'm sure you'll want to do this properly. I'll need a room. Heat. My staff will follow."

"Your staff?"

"Two trucks of Registry personnel. They're behind us."

The crowd made a sound. Low.

"The gate's open," I said. "I said it would be. To anyone."

Ottoline relaxed slightly and reached for her door.

"But first," I said, "everybody's going to hear something."

I looked up at the gun tower.

Sable was already there, with the microphone for the wall speakers in her fist.

I climbed the ladder. Sable handed me the microphone and my father's log.

I opened it to the last page.

"This is the field log of Engineer F417," I said. My voice came out of every speaker on every wall, huge and cracked.
