Chapter 5: The Complaint
The report was three paragraphs long, and my mother had signed it.
I read it on a printout in the scholars' stone house at nine the next morning.
The director sat on one side of the table with her almonds put away.
The associate dean sat on the other, a woman with short silver hair and a legal pad.
"Your mother wrote to our admissions office on Tuesday night," the dean said. "She makes three claims. I want to hear what you say to each."
I put my hands flat on the table so they would stop moving.
The first claim was that I had a history of inventing medical emergencies to get attention.
"I have a peanut allergy," I said. "I've had it since I was four. It's in my school record and my pediatrician's file. I've been to the hospital twice for it before this."
"Do you have documentation?"
I had brought all of it in a folder. I slid it across.
The second claim was that my admission application had exaggerated my allergy to qualify for a housing accommodation.
"I never asked for housing accommodations," I said. "I checked the allergy box because it's true. Nothing was exaggerated."
The dean turned a page in the folder, then another.
The third claim was the one that made my face go hot.
"Your mother says you removed a prescription medication from her niece's room and left the state with it. She says the girl is now without her own medicine."
The director made a sound in her throat.
I took out my phone and laid it on the table.
