Chapter 10: Double Agent

At eleven that night, the thirty-first floor was dark except for one lamp.

Eun-ho sat on the edge of Si-wan's desk with his shoes off.

Si-wan walked in circles around the room with his jacket over his arm and a stack of folders in his hand.

"Here is what he wants," Si-wan said. "He wants proof that I hid you."

"He also wants a reason the board can swallow without choking on it, which is money."

"So you'll give him money."

"I'll give him a ledger."

Si-wan dropped a thin green folder on the blotter beside Eun-ho's hip.

"It lists seven payments over four years. Consultants, a land purchase in Gyeonggi, a house in Jeju."

"All of them look like I took them from the company."

Eun-ho opened it.

The pages were crisp and convincing, with signatures and stamps and little handwritten notes in the margins.

"They're fake."

"They're very good fakes."

"Where did you get them?"

"I had them made this afternoon, by a lawyer who owes me a favor and will never speak of it."

Si-wan took off his tie.

"You'll find these in my desk drawer on Monday morning, in the false bottom."

"You'll copy them, and you'll take them upstairs, and you'll look as if it cost you something."

"It will cost me something."

"Good. Then it won't be acting."

Eun-ho closed the folder.
